Sulfamethoxazole

CAS No.:723-46-6
Sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) is a synthetic, short-acting sulfonamide antimicrobial that belongs to the broader family of sulfa drugs. It is most widely recognized in human and veterinary medicine as one half of the potentiated sulfonamide combination with Trimethoprim (SMZ-TMP), which is considered one of the most clinically successful antimicrobial combinations in both human and veterinary therapeutics .
As a standalone agent, Sulfamethoxazole exerts bacteriostatic activity against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens by targeting the bacterial folate biosynthesis pathway. When combined with Trimethoprim, the two agents act synergistically at sequential enzymatic steps, converting a bacteriostatic effect into a bactericidal one and dramatically expanding the spectrum of activity .
In veterinary medicine, Sulfamethoxazole is primarily used in small animal practice (dogs, cats, horses) and aquaculture, while its use in food-producing animals is increasingly restricted or banned in many jurisdictions due to sulfonamide residue concerns and antimicrobial stewardship policies .
