Sulfadimethoxine is a sulfonamide antimicrobial which is used to treat coccidiosis but also can treat other types of infections in dogs and cats.It is used to treat many infections, including treatment of respiratory, urinary tract, enteric, and soft tissue infections. It is most frequently used in veterinary medicine, although it is approved in some countries for use in humans. It inhibits bacterial synthesis of folic acid (pteroylglutamic acid) from para-aminobenzoic acid.
It is used as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial to treat or prevent infections caused by susceptible organisms. Infections treated may include pneumonia, intestinal infections (especially coccidia), soft tissue infections, and UTIs.
