Sulfacetamide Sodium, also known as Sodium Sulfacetamide, is a white to off-white crystalline powder widely used as an Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) in ophthalmic and topical formulations. It belongs to the sulfonamide class of antibiotics and exhibits broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Mechanism of Action:
Sulfacetamide Sodium acts as a competitive antagonist of para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), inhibiting bacterial dihydropteroate synthase. This prevents the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid, an essential cofactor for bacterial growth and reproduction, resulting in bacteriostatic activity.
