Ethopabate

CAS No.: 59-06-3
Ethopabate is a narrow-spectrum veterinary coccidiostat, primarily used as a synergist in combination with other anticoccidial agents (especially amprolium) in poultry feed to prevent and control chicken coccidiosis.
Mechanism:
Ethopabate is a PABA analog that competitively inhibits the parasite's dihydropteroate synthase, blocking the conversion of PABA → dihydrofolic acid → tetrahydrofolate (THF) — essential for DNA/RNA synthesis in Eimeriaspp.
Active mainly during early schizogony (Day 3–4 of the life cycle)
Acts similarly to sulfonamides in mechanism
Synergizes with amprolium (which blocks thiamine uptake), broadening spectrum and delaying resistance.
Use:
Primary use: Prevention of chicken coccidiosis caused by Eimeria acervulina, E. brunetti, and partially E. maxima(intestinal forms).
Not effective alone against E. tenella(cecal form) or E. necatrix— hence always used in combination:
With Amprolium (e.g., Compound Amprolium premix: Amprolium 25% + Ethopabate 4%)
With Sulfaquinoxaline + Amprolium (enhanced-spectrum triple combo)
Added to starter/grower feed for broilers and replacement pullets (typically 4–8 g/ton feed).
