Bromohexine HCL

CAS No.: 611-75-6
Bromhexine HCl is a synthetic derivative of the plant alkaloid vasicine, widely used in veterinary medicine as a mucolytic agent. It is primarily administered to facilitate the expulsion of viscous bronchial secretions in animals suffering from respiratory tract diseases.
1. Mechanism of Action
Bromhexine acts on the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract by:
Depolymerizing mucopolysaccharides in the sputum, which reduces the viscosity and adhesiveness of bronchial mucus.
Stimulating the serous glands to increase the production of thin, watery secretions, thereby diluting the thick mucus.
Enhancing ciliary movement, which helps clear the loosened secretions from the airways.
Additionally, Bromhexine has been shown to improve the penetration of certain antibiotics (such as tetracyclines and macrolides) into the lung tissue and bronchial secretions, making it a useful adjuvant in antimicrobial therapy.
2. Indications
Bromhexine HCl is indicated for the treatment of respiratory conditions characterized by excessive or tenacious mucus in various animal species:
Ruminants (Cattle, Sheep): Bronchopneumonia, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and aspiration pneumonia in newborns.
Swine (Pigs): Enzootic pneumonia (Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae), bacterial pneumonia, and atrophic rhinitis.
Poultry (Chickens, Turkeys): Chronic Respiratory Disease (CRD), Infectious Bronchitis (IB), Infectious Laryngotracheitis (ILT), and sinusitis.
Companion Animals (Dogs & Cats): Acute and chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma, and bronchiectasis.
