Effect of Nosiheptide on Body Weight Gain and Feed Efficiency in Broiler Chickens

June 11, 2025

Broiler chickens of both sexes were fed various levels of a new antibiotic, nosiheptide, in nine floor pen trials in Ohio, Arkansas, and Colorado to determine the effect on weight gain and feed efficiency. Nosiheptide was administered in the feed from zero to eight weeks of age at levels of .345, .689, 1.38, 2.76, 5.51, 11.0, 22.1, 27.6, 55.1,110, and 221 mg/kg of feed. A total of 11,700 broilers were used in these trials. Weight gain and feed efficiency were superior to the control for each level of nosiheptide in each trial. A statistical analysis of the combined data from all trials indicated that each level of nosiheptide was significantly better than control for both weight gain and gain/feed consumed (P<.05). No orderly dose-response was apparent and no sex × dose interaction was found. Nosiheptide appears to be an effective growth promoter for broilers in terms of weight gain and feed efficiency when administered in the feed from .345 to 221 mg/kg of feed for eight weeks.
